Almost every student feels stuck when writing their first resume because they think they have nothing to put on it. The truth is you have more than you realise. You just need to know what to include and how to present it.
A resume for a student or fresher is structured differently from one written by someone with years of experience. Your education goes at the top because it is your strongest credential right now. Include your degree or current course, your institution, your expected graduation year and your CGPA or percentage if it is strong.
Next, list any internships, part-time jobs or freelance work you have done, even if they were brief. Even a one-month internship or a weekend job shows initiative and real-world exposure. If you have done volunteer work, include that too.
Projects are extremely valuable for students with no formal work experience. Any academic project, personal project, hackathon submission or research paper belongs on your resume. For each project, write one to two lines describing what you built or did, what skills you used and what the outcome was.
Your skills section should list relevant technical and soft skills. For technical roles this might include programming languages, tools and software. For non-technical roles, focus on communication, research, data analysis, languages spoken or any other relevant competencies.
Include certifications, online courses, awards or achievements. These demonstrate that you take your development seriously beyond the classroom.
Keep your resume to one page as a student. Use a clean, readable format with consistent font sizes and clear headings. Avoid unnecessary graphics and colours that can confuse application tracking systems.
Tailor your resume for each application. If you are applying for a marketing internship, bring relevant projects and skills to the front. If you are applying for a tech role, your coding projects take priority.
Your first resume is a starting point, not a finished product. Every opportunity you take adds to it.
