It is a creative and technical field that suits people who are artistic, patient, and comfortable with software, and India’s media and entertainment industry offers growing opportunities in it.
You do not strictly need a specific degree, but focused training helps a lot, because these are skill heavy fields. Many students take a diploma or degree in animation, VFX, or multimedia, or learn through specialised courses, and then build skill in industry software used for modeling, animation, compositing, and effects. What matters most is developing both an artistic eye, meaning a sense of movement, timing, and visual quality, and technical command of the tools. Some artists are largely self taught through online resources, though structured courses give useful guidance and feedback.
The single most important thing in this career is your showreel, which is a short compilation of your best work. Studios hire based on what they can see you create, not on your certificate, so building a strong portfolio and showreel of animations or effects is essential. Start creating from day one, practise constantly, learn from feedback, and specialise in an area you enjoy, whether that is character animation, 3D modeling, or visual effects. It is a competitive field with long hours during projects, but for those who love bringing images to life, it is genuinely exciting and rewarding work.
