Feeling persistently sad, empty, unmotivated and disconnected from things you used to enjoy is not just a rough week. If these feelings last for more than two weeks and are affecting your studies, sleep and daily life, it is worth taking seriously.

Depression among students is more common than most people acknowledge. Academic pressure, social isolation, family expectations, career uncertainty and identity questions all create conditions where mental health can suffer. Recognising that what you are feeling might be depression is itself an important first step.

The most important thing you can do is talk to someone. This might be a family member, a trusted friend, a school counsellor or a mental health professional. There is still a lot of stigma around mental health in India, and many students are afraid to admit they are struggling. But depression that is left unaddressed tends to deepen over time. Reaching out early makes a real difference.

While you are working on getting support, there are things you can do to manage day-to-day. Maintain some structure in your day even when you do not feel like it. Getting up at the same time each morning, eating regular meals and spending a few minutes outside can all have a modest but real effect on mood. Exercise, even a twenty-minute walk, has strong evidence behind it for improving mental health.

Reduce isolation. Depression often pulls us toward withdrawing from others, which then makes the depression worse. Even small social contact, a message to a friend, a brief conversation, can help break that cycle.

Be honest with yourself about your studies. If you are in a period of genuine depression, you may need to temporarily reduce your expectations and focus on just getting through. That is not failure. It is prioritising your health so you can return to your studies fully.

If you are in India and need to talk to someone, iCall (9152987821) and Vandrevala Foundation (1860-2662-345) offer free mental health support. You do not have to manage this alone.
