To find the marks you need, multiply your target percentage by the total marks, then subtract the marks you have already scored. The formula is: marks needed = (target % × total marks ÷ 100) − marks already scored. For example, to reach 75% of 500 total marks you need 375 marks; if you have already scored 250, you need 125 more in your remaining exams. The calculator below works it out instantly — for your remaining exams, your final exam, or your remaining subjects.

The average you need in the subjects/exams you still have left.

How to calculate the marks you need

To find the marks you need for a target percentage, multiply your target percentage by the total marks and divide by 100, then subtract the marks you have already scored. The formula is: marks needed = (target % × total marks ÷ 100) − marks scored so far. For example, for 75% of 500 marks you need 375 marks overall; if you have already scored 250, you need 125 more. The calculator above does this instantly and also tells you what that means as a percentage of your remaining exams.

What marks do you need in your final exam?

When your final exam is worth a fixed weight, the marks you need depend on your current grade and that weight. The formula is: required final % = (target overall % − current grade % × completed weight ÷ 100) ÷ (final weight ÷ 100). For example, with 70% so far and a final worth 40%, to finish at 75% overall you need about 82.5% in the final. Use the “What to score in my final” mode above to calculate it for your numbers.

What average do you need in your remaining subjects?

To reach a target overall average, the average you need in your remaining subjects is: (target average × total subjects − current average × subjects done) ÷ remaining subjects. For example, with a 72% average in 3 subjects and 2 left, to reach an 80% overall average you need to average 92% in the remaining two. The “Average for remaining subjects” mode calculates this for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the marks I need to get a certain percentage?

Multiply your target percentage by the total marks and divide by 100 to get the marks you need overall, then subtract the marks you have already scored. For example, for 60% of 500 marks you need 300 overall; if you have 180, you need 120 more.

How many marks do I need to pass?

Set your target to your passing percentage (often 33% or 40% in Indian boards and colleges) in the calculator. For example, to pass at 33% of 100 marks you need 33 marks; if your exam is out of 80, you need about 27.

How many marks do I need to score 75% (or for distinction)?

A distinction is usually 75%. Multiply 75 by your total marks and divide by 100. For 500 total marks, 75% is 375 marks. Subtract what you have already scored to see how many more you need.

What marks do I need in my final exam to pass or hit a target?

It depends on your current grade and how much the final is worth. Use the formula: required final % = (target overall − current grade × completed weight ÷ 100) ÷ (final weight ÷ 100). The calculator’s final-exam mode does this automatically.

Can I still reach my target if I have scored low so far?

Sometimes not — if the marks you would need are more than the marks remaining, the target is no longer reachable. The calculator tells you this and shows the highest percentage you can still finish at, so you can set a realistic new goal.

How do I calculate the average I need in my remaining subjects?

Use: (target average × total subjects − current average × subjects done) ÷ remaining subjects. The “Average for remaining subjects” mode in the calculator does it instantly.
