To become a doctor in India you must clear NEET, complete an MBBS degree, and finish an internship before you can practise, with further specialisation through NEET PG if you want to go deeper.

The journey starts in Class 11 and 12 with the science stream and biology, since NEET is based on Physics, Chemistry and Biology. NEET is the single entrance exam for almost all medical colleges in India, so these two years should focus heavily on it.

After clearing NEET, you join an MBBS programme, which takes five and a half years including a one year compulsory internship. During this time you learn medicine in depth and get real clinical training.

Once you complete MBBS and register with the medical council, you are a qualified doctor and can practise as a general physician. Many doctors then specialise through NEET PG, leading to an MD or MS in fields like surgery, paediatrics, or cardiology.

If you do not clear NEET or prefer another route, there are many respected healthcare careers beyond MBBS, such as dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and allied health sciences.

Example: A student who decided in Class 11 to become a doctor built her entire PCB study plan around the NEET syllabus, cleared it on her second attempt, and is now doing MBBS at a government college.

One practical tip: Becoming a doctor is a commitment of at least nine to eleven years including specialisation, so be sure it is a path you genuinely want, not one chosen only for prestige.
