Scoring above 90% in board exams comes down to three things: finishing the syllabus early, solving previous years’ papers and sample papers, and presenting your answers well in the exam. Boards reward thorough, well-presented preparation more than raw intelligence, which means a disciplined student can absolutely reach 90% or more.
Stick to your prescribed textbooks, NCERT for CBSE, and complete the full syllabus first. Boards rarely ask anything outside the textbook, so covering every chapter, not just favourite ones, is the foundation. Skipping topics is the most common reason students fall short.
Solve previous years’ question papers and sample papers under timed conditions. This shows you the pattern, the important questions and the marking scheme. After the Class 12 syllabus is done, this single habit often raises marks the most.
Presentation matters in boards. Write neatly, underline key terms, use diagrams and bullet points where relevant, and clearly number your answers. Examiners reward answers that are easy to read and follow the marking scheme.
Example: A CBSE Class 12 student in Pune who finished the syllabus by December and then solved one sample paper every two days, checking against the official marking scheme, went from 78% in pre-boards to 92% in finals, mostly by fixing presentation and time management.
Revise regularly. Make short notes and formula sheets for last-minute revision, and go through them repeatedly in the final weeks.
One practical tip: Practise writing full papers in 3 hours with a clock in front of you. Many students know the content but lose marks by running out of time. Training your writing speed and time management is often the missing 5 to 10%.
